The Beauty of North East Thailand

North East Thailand - Khao Yai National Park

There are many different reasons why North East Thailand is a hot vacation spot for tourists. One is that it is much quieter than the hustle and bustle of life in big cities in Thailand like Bangkok and others, and this area is rich in culture, language and way of life.

Food here is also more flavorful and spicier than other regions, such as favorites like grilled chicken "gai yang" or grilled pork "moo yang" served with chili sauce, and som tam, a really flavorful and spicy papaya salad. Sticky rice "kow neow" is commonly eaten together with these foods.

There are many different places to visit here from the Friendly Bridge that connects Thailand to its neighbor Laos to the ancient temples and monuments like those in Buri Ram, Roi Et or Surin.

One of the most important historical sites in North East Thailand is the Khmer sites in Phanom Rung Park. A deeply religious site dedicated to the God Shiva, it was built around 12 AD on top of Phanom Rung Hill, a long extinct volcano in the providence of Buri Ram.

That isn't all this area has to offer visitors. There are many other archeological sites dating back some 4000 years, and there are even caves with ancient painting on them.

Khao Yai National Park, Thailand - Wildlife There are also many national parks in this region, including the oldest in Thailand, Khao Yai National Park. This park not only has a wide assortment of exotic wildlife and huge areas of rain forest, but also over 500 kilometers of trails to hike at your leisure. You can get here from Bangkok either by train or bus, and there are also accommodations that can be arranged.

Udon Thani, 564 kilometers Northeast of Bangkok, is another provincial city in this area that can't be missed. Transformed from a quiet town into a large support center for the American Airbase during the Vietnam War, it has continued to be a center for tourism to this day, with it being home to many digs and sites some going back over 5,000 years. The one of particular interest is the world heritage site of the prehistoric people and culture of Ban Chiang.

If you are planning a journey to this amazing area, it is wise to plan ahead, there are many guided tours available, and these as well as the resorts and hotels tend to fill up fast.

If you are planning to rent a car or other vehicle, Thais drive on the left side of the road. That is opposite from the U.S. but the same as some European countries. It is not difficult, but requires some thought. Make sure you're up for the challenge.

The best way to get into this area is to fly into one of the main cities, and then take a bus or train from there. You will be able to best get a look at all the scenery of the area without getting lost or stranded. At last count, Thai Airways has three flights daily to Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchatani.
