Thailand People - Who Are They?

The warmth of the Thailand people is just as memorable as its world-famous tourist destinations like Bangkok and Phuket. Thailand is inhabited by over 60 million individuals and has a history extending back over 10,000 years. Thailand has a rich ethnic diversity which has helped to enrich the country and helped make Thailand one of the most hospitable places for foreigners.Ethnic ThaisThe majority of Thailand's population is ethnically Thai. Though their origins are somewhat murky, ethnic Thais are believed to have come from the Yunnan province of China and arriving in large numbers at various times. Their arrival displaced the native Mon people of Burma and the Khmer, mainly located in Cambodia. Thai Malays are mainly Muslim and are congregated in the southern region of Thailand. Chinese Immigrants
Chinese immigrants came to Thailand in the 19th and 20th centuries and married into the population. Bringing their business savvy with them, Chinese immigrants control the bulk of major businesses in Thailand.Tribal people from China and Tibet also began arriving several hundred years ago. These groups known simply as hill tribes live in the mountainous region of Thailand and mainly farm for a living. Public ImagePeople in Thailand are laid back and do not like confrontation. Calling acquaintances by their first name even in business settings is usually customary. Public image is important and Thai people will take pains not to embarrass themselves or others. Confrontations, accusations or acting in an aggressive manner will not be beneficial to getting heard and getting results when visiting Thailand. If confrontation is necessary, it should be done in private. Loud talking, big hand motions and public displays of affection are frowned upon. ReligionReligion is very important in Thailand and the majority of the population practices Buddhism. The peace and social nature of their religion can be reflected in the emphasis on family and community. You will find Thai people tend to eat and work together in groups. Taking shoes off before entering someone's home is also customary and respect for religious symbols, figures and monks should be shown. Modest dress and a clean and neat appearance will go over well.Thai PhilosophyThough the Thailand people are hard working, 'Sanuk' or fun is a primal part of their nature. Playfulness, lightheartedness and a happy smiling nature is inserted into all aspects of life. The Thai concept of time can also be different than what most Westerners are used too and meeting deadlines or productivity is more relaxed.
